Car sales decline 8.9%

Car sales in the UK declined for the third month in succession in September, according to data released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Although sales have fallen again the rate of decline is less severe than in August. Sales last month were down 8.9% from September 2009 following August's 17.5% fall. However, sales last year were boosted by the government's car scrappage incentive scheme, which ran from March 2009 to March of this year, meaning that figures were artificially high. Despite the third month of falling sales, the SMMT said sales for 2010 as a whole should still be higher than 2009 and January's rise in VAT could boost sales in November and December. "Clearly it is a tough operating environment, and there is concern about public expenditure, and inevitably business and consumer confidence is not as high as we would like it to be," said SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt.

Car production rises 37%

Car production in August was 37% higher than the same month last year, according to data released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Year-to-date output is up by 41% and car manufacturers turned out 77,000 vehicles in August of which 57,000 are destined for export, a rise of 51% on the year. "UK vehicle and engine production continues to lead a strong recovery. However, there are still significant challenges ahead and government must do all it can to encourage continued international investment in UK based R&D, skills, plant and machinery," said SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt.

New car sales in the UK declined sharply in August, the second consecutive month that figures have fallen, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). There were just over 55,000 new cars registered in August, a drop of 17.5% compared to the same month last year. Although the figure is low August traditionally sees the lowest volume of monthly sales ahead of September's launch of the new registration plate. SMMT have warned that the market would remain tough for the rest of the year but still expects more than two million new cars to be sold in 2010. "The industry enjoyed a better-than-expected first half of the year and, despite the difficulties, SMMT is forecasting that new car registrations will close just ahead of 2009 figures," said SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt.

UK car production declines 8.9%

Car production in the UK declined by 8.9% in July compared to the same month last year, according to Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Just over 98,000 cars were produced in July and the decline comes after eight successive months of production increases. The decline has been attributed to the ending of the UK's scrappage scheme, which gave consumers £2,000 off a new car if they trade in a car that is at least ten years old. Despite the negative figure for July SMMT chief Paul Everitt remains positive over the future of the industry. "The easing of demand was anticipated following the end of scrappage incentives in markets around Europe. UK vehicle production is more than 40% up on last year's levels and whilst we expect some challenging conditions, economic growth has returned in all major markets around the world," said Mr Everitt.
